Team Formats

Two societies are at Brookvale. Riverside Golf Society is playing a Texas Scramble, three teams of four. Castle Hill Society is playing Greensomes Stableford in pairs. Both organisers set the day up on their phone in a few minutes, and PazGolf works out the rest: the teams, the team handicaps, the drives each player still owes, and the results.

The two questions

Every day asks the same two questions about its format, whether it's a society's day from the club's QR code, a golf day you plan ahead, or a club competition:

  • How is the ball played? Individual, or one ball per team: Greensomes, Foursomes, Pinehurst or Texas Scramble.
  • How is it scored? Stableford or Stroke Play.

The day is named the way golfers say it: "Greensomes Stableford", "Foursomes Stroke Play". Pick a team format and Team Settings opens under the questions.

Step 1 with Texas Scramble chosen: How is the ball played? Texas Scramble, How is it scored? Stroke Play, with the note that a Texas Scramble is played as stroke play, then Team Settings: team size 4 players and the minimum drives for teams of 4, 3 and 2, filled in as 3, 4 and 6

A Texas Scramble is always played as stroke play: the lowest net score wins. Pick it and the scoring changes to Stroke Play for you.

A team format never counts for handicap, and its team handicaps have their own percentages (below), so the handicap allowance isn't asked.

The formats

Format How it's played Team Team handicap
Foursomes One ball, played in turn. The partners take turns on the tee Pairs 50% of each player's handicap
Greensomes Both drive, the pair picks the better drive, then they play it in turn Pairs 60% of the lower handicap, 40% of the higher
Pinehurst Both drive, each plays the other's ball for the second shot, the pair picks one ball and plays it in turn Pairs 60% and 40%, as Greensomes
Texas Scramble Everyone drives, the team picks the best shot, and everyone plays from there, all the way to the hole 2, 3 or 4 Teams of 4: 25%, 20%, 15%, 10%. Teams of 3: 30%, 20%, 10%. Teams of 2: 35%, 15%

Team handicaps

PazGolf works out each team's handicap for you. It takes each player's handicap for the tees they're playing, puts the team in order from the lowest, gives each player their share from the table above, adds them up and rounds once. The team handicap is on the organiser's groups and at the top of the team's card, with each player's handicap and the strokes they bring.

Each team plays off its own tees: the tees all its players share or, if they're on different tees, the tees most of them play (on a tie, the longer).

A team's handicap is set when the team is made, and again when its card is opened, so it uses the handicaps on the day. Once the team has a score in, it stays as it is.

Teams and pairs

A scramble team is the group. Make the groups and each group is a team. A team of three or two is fine; it plays off the handicap shares for its size.

Pairs are made in each group. A four-ball is two pairs. In a three-ball, two players make a pair and the third is the marker: they keep the pair's card and aren't in the competition. PazGolf names each pair by its surnames, "Baird & Irvine".

The organiser's Group 1 at 10:00, three players: the pair Baird & Irvine with team handicap 12, Helen Baird and Paul Irvine, then the marker, Susan Johnston, who keeps the pair's card and isn't in the competition

To change partners, tap a player, then a player in the other pair. PazGolf asks before it swaps them. Once a pair has a score in, it stays together.

The team's card

One phone in the group keeps the card, the same as an individual round. A team card has one score a hole for each team: one ball, one score. A Greensomes four-ball has both pairs on one card, side by side.

A Greensomes card for a four-ball: Carson & Elliott, team handicap 12, and Gibson & Hamilton, team handicap 28, each player with their handicap and strokes and the drives they need, then both pairs' columns on the scorecard

The shot markers on each hole come from the team handicap, as they do on any card. A Stableford round shows the points under each score.

Minimum drives

In a scramble, every player's drive has to be used a minimum number of times. Step 1 fills in the R&A's figures for each team size, which you can change:

Team of 18 holes 9 holes
4 3 drives each 2 drives each
3 4 drives each 2 drives each
2 6 drives each 3 drives each

Each team plays off the figure for its own size. Greensomes and Pinehurst can have a minimum too, one figure for everyone, or none: leave it blank. Foursomes has no choice of drive, so there's nothing to set.

When a day has a minimum, the card keeps count. After each score, it asks Whose drive?, with each player's count so far.

Whose drive? on hole 1, score 4: Eoin with 4 drives so far and a green tick, Aoife 2 of 3 with needs 1 drive, Niamh 0 of 3 with needs 3 drives, Siobhan 3 drives so far with a green tick

The same counts are at the top of the card, so the team can see at a glance who still needs drives: a grey badge before any, yellow part of the way there, a green tick once they're done. A player short of the minimum shows "2 / 3"; once they have it, their count, "4 drives". Tap a name on any hole to change whose drive it was. Once everyone has their drives in, the card stops asking.

The scramble team's card: Your group starts on the 10th, Team Handicap 11, each player's handicap and strokes with their drives so far, from 4 drives with a green tick to 0 of 3 needing 3 drives, and the Whose drive? column beside the score

The card warns you if anyone's short when you submit, and you can still submit: it's the society's day and the society's rules.

Starting on the 10th

Sending a group off the 10th, or every group off a different hole for a shotgun start, is set on the group: tap Edit on the group for its tee time and start hole. The player's page then says "You tee off at 09:00 from the 10th", and their card starts on the 10th, with Your group starts on the 10th at the top, runs to the 18th and carries on from the 1st. The front and back nine totals are still the course's own.

The results

A team day's results have a row for each team: its name with its players under it, its team handicap and its score.

Castle Hill Society's results: the prize winner, Gibson & Hamilton with 35 points, then Team Results with each pair, its team handicap, gross score and points

On a trip

A trip's round has one format list instead of the two questions. The pairs formats are offered as match play: Foursomes, Greensomes and Pinehurst matches between two pairs, on the trip's team board. A Texas Scramble on a trip is played for fun and counts for no standings. Rounds, groups and the reveal has the trip's formats, and Playing a round has the Foursomes card.
